Flag Cheese Tray and Marathon Training Week 7

Hello! How are you? What are you running? What are you eating? I’m wrapping up a week 7 of marathon training. It was a rough week because I had some stomach issues that kept me from fueling properly before and after my runs. Boo. But, it happens. I really need to review what I’ve been eating to figure it out.

Marathon Training Week 7

Sunday – 21 Day Fix hard core

Monday – 8 mile run and 21 day fix cardio

Tuesday – 7 miles with 5 at tempo <- this was a really hard run for me. I felt like I was at an 8 on the effort level just to keep a good pace.

Wednesday – 4 miles easy and 21 day upper fix

Thursday – I have no idea. 8 miles! I looked it up on my new Garmin running watch. Boom.

Friday – 8 miles and stretching

Saturday – 11 miles <- had stomach issues in the morning before my run. It lasted all day and I can’t figure out the cause.

Pink Drink

Have you tried the Starbucks Pink Drink yet? I keep seeing it all over Instagram and finally got one yesterday.

How to order a pink drink: Ask (nicely) for a Strawberry Acai Refresher and ask for coconut milk instead of water.

This morning while Vegas slept in Ben and I went for coffee and a croissant. Actually I got an iced tea because my stomach still felt off. Me skip iced coffee?! That’s how you know something’s wrong!

While I ran and ate and did other blog things Vegas slept, per usual.

I usually make a flag cake for Fourth of July but wanted to try something different this year. This morning I did a test run with making a cheese plate in the form of a flag. It was so much easier than a cake! The ‘stars’ are olives in hummus.

Happy Fourth of July!!

Short trailer for From Fat to Finish Line

I almost didn't write a post today, but I wanted to share this video, so this will be a super quick post.

As I mentioned, the From Fat to Finish Line documentary is going to be released on August 2nd--it's coming up so fast! I'm a nervous wreck, especially when I saw this on Amazon:

"Starring Katie Foster"... what?! This is just so crazy to me. I'm actually more nervous than excited at this point. When I agreed to this whole thing, I never dreamed it would actually get this far. On Amazon? And Netflix? It blows my mind!

What I’ve Got My Eye On

Happy long weekend, y’all! WE MADE IT!

The other day I was thinking about this blog, and I realized that I have not really blogged about preppy things or running things much lately. I’m starting to marathon train ASAP (YASSS), so I will definitely be talking a lot more about running, so let’s talk about some pretty preppy things, shall we? AND what’s on sale this weekend, because it’s #allthethings, basically.

Bucketfeet Pineapple

I saw these pretty shoes on Grace’s blog and had. to. have. them. Fit note: I think they run small. I ordered them in a 9, and had to size up to a 10. But I’d been looking for a good casual sneak, and I’m definitely not a Toms or a Converse kinda girl.

Nike Elastika Keyhole Tank

I am ALL about this Nike top (which is also on sale.) I’m lucky enough to get lots of awesome free gear through this blog and work, but that doesn’t always mean the fit is the most flattering. So the other night, I went shopping, looking for some tanks that’d be flattering to wear on camera when I’m on our show at work. I love the loose fit of this tank and the perforations that let your sports bra show through.

Here’s some awesome sales and my picks:

J. Crew: 40% off with code COOLSTYLE // my pick: the damn Birkenstocks everyone else has their eye on, even though I’m sure they’re about to be passé in a hot second

J. Crew Factory: 50% sitewide, extra 15% off with code HAPPYSALE // my pick: all about this ikat bikini

Kate Spade: 30% off with code SUNSHINE // my pick: pretty sure I need this banana bag

Lilly Pulitzerno real sale, per us, but some cute gifts with purchase // my pick: this casual, classic swingy dress

Y tu? What do you have your eyes on these days?

High Intensity Intervals

I recently spent some time looking at my 10K training, to see if maybe there was something I was doing then that helped the weight drop off so easily (like I said, I wasn't trying to get below my goal weight; but shortly after I started the 80/20 training, my weight started dropping again pretty easily for some reason). I had tried a new training plan that involved a lot of short intervals--something I wasn't used to. I had never done 45-second or 60-second intervals before.

It made me wonder if maybe the high-intensity intervals, coupled with the very slow, easy runs, helped me drop the weight. I have no idea, but I training that way made me realize that I really enjoy doing short intervals like that. It's a very tough workout overall, but you only have to focus on short little bursts of effort at a time, before you get a break.

Finding Balance in a Busy Lifestyle

As a single lady in NYC, I’m juggling a lot (but hi, aren’t we all?) — work, dating, running, maintaining my apartment, Junior League, saving time for friends and family. In order to get things done and stay relatively sane, I’m always seeking balance. Balance looks different day to day for me — sometimes I’m working late, but my apartment will be a mess. Sometimes my apartment is spotless, but I’m choosing to nurture myself and my mental health instead of doing something more social. Here’s a few things I do to find balance in health and life:

1. Schedule out my workouts.

I’m really lucky that I have at least 1-2 work related workouts a week, whether I’m in our show or have been invited to a press event, but I make a point every weekend at taking a look at my upcoming week and figuring out when/what workouts I’ll be doing, and trying not to do things like have two strength classes back to back.

2. Be patient with myself.

I really can’t do it all, so to get down on myself for not being able to cram 14 million things into one day is unrealistic, and to expect that I will always be all cylinders firing in every area of my life. Sometimes I’m crushing it at work but I feel like I’m being a crappy friend, and sometimes work takes a backseat to a friend or family’s crisis.

new chapter

3. Take my vitamins.

Yeah, yeah, like your mom told you. I eat fairly healthy but I’m not perfect. Plus, a busy lifestyle + workout out hard takes a lot out of you, so I supplement with multivitamins. I’ve been a fan of New Chapter Organic for a long time, so I was happy to find their Every Woman’s One Day multi. It’s made with whole foods and probiotics, so it’s easy on my sensitive stomach. Plus, it’s easy to find IRL in stores like Whole Foods or online on Amazon. And if you’re a vegetarian…so is this!

How do you find balance?

2016 Goals Check In and How I got Locked IN My House

2016 running blog goals

Hello! How are you? How was your June? It’s July 1st which means something very important to my fellow goal setters out there:

The year is half way over and we should check in with our 2016 Goals

How are you doing with your goals and resolutions for this year?

victoria secret coupon code review 2 (450x800)

My 2016 Goals:

1. Run 2016 miles. Yes, I want to run the year!

Status: To run 2,016 miles in one year (52 weeks) you need to average  40 miles a week. I’ve been averaging around there between 34 and 40 miles per week and sometimes more than 40. So I am on track  but I need to keep better account of all my miles. I think my major issue isn’t going to be not running all the mileage but not keeping proper track and not having ‘proof’ if only just for myself.

I can run for hours, but can’t take 2 seconds to write it down. <- maybe I should work on that next year!

2. PR in the marathon. I just have to go all out and get comfortable being uncomfortable running.

Status: I’m training for a marathon right now and aiming for 1 speed or temp run a week AND getting into higher mileage. I’m happy with my consistency not so much my speed. I also might have to think about losing weight because my marathon PRs were when I was about 10 pounds lighter. I’m not in as good of shape as I was when I PR-ed and that came with a lot of races and mileage – which takes time since I don’t want to get injured.

But I’m working on it and feel like I’m going to make good progress toward this goal by the end of the year just not maybe by my next few races (I have one in July and one in August). I think it’s going to take me about 6 months to build back up to my PR level so it’s still do-able but will take a lot of work.

3. Get on a budget and save 20% of my income.

Status: I have not really done anything about this. I signed up for QuickBooks to keep track of expenses and payments and invoices but haven’t budgeted to save money. I’m going to do that today.

I am also considering not buying any new casual clothes for the rest of the year. I discovered a lot of clothes I had in storage recently (I put in there when I made my capsule wardrobe ) and I should wear those before buying anything else. Maybe not a 100% no-buy rule but putting a big limit on it.

4. TBD I’m thinking about spending more time with the people I love. They are kinda great.

Status: Since I have been studying for my health coaching certification I spent a lot of my extra time on that. Now that the lectures and tests are done I want to visit my mom and lil brother and my niece once a week.

Last month I did cook Blue Apron with Matt & we’re going to hang out for a whole week soon when my parents go on a cruise. I’m sure he’ll be super sick of me at the end of that!

cooking with matt (600x800) memorial day with mj 4 (450x800)

Bonus: I also randomly said I want to learn how to start a fire with basic materials like sticks and maybe a fire starter in the woods.

Status: I watch a lot of Naked and Afraid and still have no idea how to survive in the wild.

But I am going to ask my other brother since he just went to Yosemite if he learned anything about surviving in the wild.

Since I’m reviewing my goals, I might as well review my month…

Best RUN EAT and REPEAT from June

Best RUN

The day I got to Florida and FELL on my run, but then saw three manatees and it made my entire life better.

I also had a really good tempo run last week that I mentioned on Instagram but not here. Follow along there for randomness and running.

And finally I should share why I was locked inside my house today…

When I opened up the door this morning to go running I saw a spider web going from the wall in front of my door to the bush on the side of it. It was a multi-layer spider web right in front of my door completely blocking my path.

There was a small line of spider web yesterday too and I just swiped it away. But today there was a lot more stringy web – that spider came back with a vengeance! This time I had to go back inside to get something to wipe it out of the way.

Picture this: the one random redhead runner girl in the complex stepping outside her apartment… she stops and stares at something in front of her (but you don’t see anything). She turns around, goes back inside and comes out with a wad of paper towels. Then she frantically waves the paper towels in the air in front of her for no obvious reason. Then steps back inside for a second, returns without the paper towels and finally runs off like a weirdo.

I say this because after doing my invisible spider web dance I saw a guy in the parking lot across from my front door just standing there staring at me confused. Ha!

That is my life.

Question: How are your goals for this year coming along?

Happy Friday, friends, and happy Fourth of July weekend! The Fourth is always such a happy time. Everyone seems to be in a good mood–grilling (FYI this is the most popular burger recipe of all time on Pinterest), celebrating, lighting the fireworks we bought in another state. And I don’t know if this is yet another...Read More
